SMCDSB Labour Update - Sept 30

Dear Parents and Guardians:

You may have heard reports in the media about CUPE education workers initiating a work-to-rule campaign beginning Monday, September 30 in schools across the province. At the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) CUPE represents custodial staff.

CUPE’s current position is that it would begin its job action with a partial withdrawal of core services. We know that our custodians provide important services within our schools and board offices and as a result you will begin to see an impact at your child’s school.  As always, the safety of our students and staff will be our main priority and we will work to ensure this continues during CUPE’s work to rule campaign.

We understand that a labour disruption can be unsettling for students, parents and school communities. As a Catholic school board, we respect the collective bargaining process and we are hopeful that a freely negotiated agreement is reached quickly. I am confident that our schools will remain welcoming Christ centred environments as we balance the rights of our custodial staff with our collective goal of providing a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students.

We very much appreciate your understanding and patience. We will continue to keep you informed and encourage you to visit the Labour Updates of our website at If you have specific issues or questions related to your school, please contact your principal directly.

We ask for your prayers for a speedy and just resolution to this matter.

Yours in Faith,

Brian Beal

Director of Education
